Throat itch/Cough home remedy

28 Dec

This one is straight from the Mom cookbook of magic medicine. I don’t know why it works..but it seems to work whenever I have a bad throat.

1. Get equal measures of cumin seeds, black pepper and ginger. Grind them all together into a fine powder. If you do not have a mixer like me now 🙂 buy all the stuff in pre-powdered form and mix equal measures of each of them together.

2. Get some carom seeds.Grind it if you can and mix with the powder in Step 1. If not that’s fine.

3.  Take a spoonful of the powder in Step 1 and 2 spoonfuls of the seeds in Step 2. Mix together.

4. Boil a cup of water and add the powder to the water as it is boiling. Let it simmer for a little while..maybe a minute or two.

5. Switch off flame and pour water into a cup. Don’t throw away the seeds; you can re-use them for a glass or two more at least.

Drink around 1/4th to 1/2 a cup..as hot and as concentrated as you can. Sip it slowly, it’s not tasty but it’s magic for the throat. Drink it thrice a day for at least 2-3 days in a row. If it still doesn’t get okay, go to a doctor 🙂

Lemon Rice

28 Dec

1. Cook as much rice as you normally eat in a pressure cooker and leave it outside to cool. Make sure that rice isn’t too wet; get the rice-water proportion perfectly right.

2. Take some mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped green chillies and some groundnuts and fry them all in a little oil. It doesn’t need to be deep fried at all; just a teaspoon or two of oil should do.

3. Once its all fried add a little salt and some turmeric powder. Stir around till the oil turns light yellow.

4. Make sure that the rice has cooled down sufficiently. If yes, add the oil along with all its ingredients to the rice and mix well. Once the rice has completely turned yellow, you should have a nice contrast of the yellow rice, green chillies and curry leaves, the black mustard and the reddish brown ground nuts.

5. Squeeze a little lemon juice into the rice. Mix well. Taste if sour enough; continue adding lemon juice if not so. If lemons are not available easily, dissolve a little citric acid in water and use the same. It’s equally efficient.

6. Server with a few papads, chips or coconut chutney.

That’s it..it’s a super easy recipe and hardly takes much time 🙂
